I joined a gmod server yesterday (ttt_67thway_v3 & ttt_minecraft_b5) and i found the gameplay to be confusing/didnt make much sense. That might have just been that particular server though, so i will join a few more.

At first it's confusing, you have to play more to understand.
  • You're a traitor, you kill everything that moves (innocent and detectives), except for your comrades. You can use your Context menu equipment and traps that can be activated only by the traitors.
  • You're a innocent. Most boring role. You have to find out who the Traitors are basing on the behavior. Trust nobody, as that guy there who claims he's innocent might be a traitor!
  • You're a detective. Less boring than being a innocent, but you get a detective hat, and Context menu equipment like a Health Station. Detectives spawn with a DNA scanner. Just like innocent, you have to find the traitors. Detectives are the only people who you can trust.
What's RDM?
RDM stands for Random DeathMatch. This is killing people for no reason. Example:

Innocent killing Innocent - RDM
Innocent killing Detective - RDM
Detective killing Innocent - RDM
Detective killing Detective - RDM
Traitor killing Traitor - RDM


Traitor killing Innocent - NOT RDM
Traitor killing Detective - NOT RDM
Detective killing Traitor - NOT RDM
Innocent killing Traitor - NOT RDM

People usually get QUEUED for slay for a next round, then a kick, and then a ban.
Mass RDM = Multiple RDM events in a single round (Innocent killing ~6 innocents)
Mass RDM usually = permanent ban.

lots of TTT servers in gmod try to be unique and add lots of custom C-menu items, hats, weapons etc.

Or he can look up on YouTube videos on people playing TTT servers. I've watched a few videos and understood it perfectly. Seeing the game being played helped me understand how to play.

WHO KNOWS AND WHO CARES? We're getting a TF2 Deathrun server soon why why get a TTT server almost right after? Let's just give everything some time.
